How do I stop my child’s nosebleed?

In this video, Dr. Fahed Aljaser explains 3 steps that you can use to stop your child’s nosebleed. These steps include compressing a specific area of the nose (shown in the video) for at least 5 -10 mins, and bending forward at the waist during compression to prevent blood from going back down the throat. For young children, try providing a distraction, and reassuring statements to help reduce discomfort. Go to the hospital if bleeding does not slow down or stop after 20 mins of applying direct pressure, if your child faints or is lethargic, or if your child appears pale. Do not compress the nasal bones between the eyes, or lean back, or apply an ice pack to the neck, forehead, nasal bones as these techniques do not help. You can prevent nosebleeds by using a warm or cold air humidifier in your child’s room (without additives) and by discouraging nose picking and keeping fingernails trimmed.
